Years ago my dad came home with a dutch shepherd. He was my dads new partner. We named him Deets after a character in Lonesome Dove. Deets trained with my dad for months to become an amazing drug sniffing attack dog. He would drive around with my dad all day and sniff out drugs that the bad guys thought they could hide. He never got to use his attack skills on a criminal but if he did I sure it would have been awesome. When we first got Deets we where a tad bit terrified of him. He was a big dog with sharp teeth. Eventually we got used to him and though we know he could take down a full grown man with one command we would wrestle and play with him all the time. He became a member of our family over the years. Eventually he retired from his police duties and our family bought him from the state of Utah. He was officially our dog. Sadly, today, after so many years he died. In memory of our puppy here are some pictures and stories about him:
- He loved string cheese; if you opened a string cheese he would hear the wrapper tearing and be running towards you for a bite. He successfully stole pieces out of peoples hand.
- He was deathly afraid of trumpets.
- We would hatch chickens in the spring and he would always let them perch upon his head and torso.
- Robin had a guinea pig that he would occasionally pick up and gently carry throughout the house.
- Even though he was so nice to chicks and guinea pigs he was a terror to all cats and deer.
- When we first got him (from a kennel in I think Germany) he had never seen stairs. He was so scared of these new things he refused to go down them. It took about an hour, lots of pieces of roll and pushing to get him to go down the 8 steps we had in our house.
- In his younger years taking him on a walk was a chance for him to drag you throughout the town. Winter walks where always interesting when you could slide down the icy road with him pulling you with the leash. Here he is with my mom about to go on a walk. If you said the word "walk" in his presence he would start freaking. He would jump, whine, rub your hand and be generally annoying until you took him on his walk.
- He always wanted to play. There was an orange plastic ball that he would roll around and bite that he loved. Anything turned into a toy for him. My favorite was throwing snowballs into the snow and watch him dig with his nose trying to find it. He also loved playing fetch with sticks in the lake. One day my dad threw a long stick in the lake. Deets swam out, and bite it on the very tip; he tried to lift it out of the water and swim at the same time. It was so long that when he tried to lift it out of the water the weight would force his head under. It took him a very long time to get back to shore; but it was quite funny to watch.
- When he retired from his work he would be so depressed when my dad would leave to work without him. He would sit at the stairs all day looking out the window for him to come back.
- Wherever my dad was in the house, Deets had to know. He would follow him around constantly.
- He loved to wrestle Chase. It would turn into a crazy fight leaving decorations, pillows and other things in the room knocked over and scattered. Some wrestling moments:
- Whenever we played a board game on the floor he would come stand in the middle so we would stop playing and pay attention to him.
- Deets loved to be petted. If you petted him for a minute and stopped he would get his nose under your hand and keep lifting until you decided to start again.
- He loved going places in the car. Especially to the lake. Once we turned toward the mountain he would start going crazy. He would spin circles in the back, jump from seat to seat and whine until we got there and let him out.
- Deets was my Dads trapping buddy. No hike was too long for him.
Deets, even though I am still slightly bitter at you for killing my cat, I will miss you. You where an amazing dog.

Awww, Kaitlyn. That is a cute post. I love dogs! I am sorry you lost him. PS my husband thinks it's so cool that his name was Deets.
This post makes me sad. I miss Deets.
